What Kind of RV’s Are There?

There are many different options available depending on what you’re looking for. You can choose between a towable unit such as a travel trailer, fifth wheel and truck camper or you can also choose a motorized RV such as a full-size motorhome that includes a Class A, Class B, and Class C RV’s. These vary in size and amenities depending on what you need.

Where Is the Best Place to Camp?

Campgrounds and RV parks are all over the country. The first choice you have to make is where you want to headfirst! Do you want to go to the mountains or to the beach? Are you looking for theme park adventures or trails in nature? You’re sure to find the perfect spot for your entire family. There’s also the public land option where you can camp in a national park.

Which RV Should You Buy?

This is a big investment and commitment. Once you’ve researched the type of RV you want and which size and budget fits your goals best, you can invest in the RV or motorhome that is going to best fit your needs. When you purchase an RV, there are a few things to consider:

  • Size of vehicle – You want to go with the size that you’re comfortable transporting but also fits your family.
  • Cost- What cost are you comfortable spending? Having a budget in place first helps you to comfortably enjoy your RV adventure. There’s also more to budget for than just the RV itself. From maintenance to paying fees at the sites, you want to know what cost to expect.

How Do I Plan My First Trip?

Planning your first adventure is easy to do when you know what to expect. Choose a location that fits your budget and interests to begin with. This allows you to be comfortable in the area while you’re learning the RV life. You need to budget for fees and costs that you will incur as a part of your travel as well.

Some parks have a variety of costs that you’ll be expected to pay once you arrive. It’s always a good idea to call ahead to your destination to find out the rules for their site as well. This prevents any issues when you arrive. You’ll find some parks offer a membership that will help cut costs for a variety of locations as well.

What Goes into Planning My Route?

This means more than simply finding a destination and heading there. You want to carefully consider your options as the vehicle you’re taking is different than a regular road trip. Consider the various weather you may run into, how long the route will take, and what type of service stations are available along the preferred route.

What Items Should You Bring?

The items you should bring other than what you pack for a vacation include:

  • Gear that helps to maintain the safety of your RV while traveling. This could look like wheel or leveling blocks, a tire pressure gauge, and tool kit. This allows you to help take care of small issues along the way.
  • Generator – Even if your location you’re headed to has power hookups, you want to keep a generator with you for emergencies. Sometimes power goes out at the campsite, or they simply may not have hookups available. This means you’re ready to go no matter what happens.
  • Storage – Don’t forget to have some storage boxes on hand for items such as extra blankets, food, or other items you may need.
  • Activities – While there’s generally a lot to do at the site, you also want to have items to keep you busy should you have downtime. For example, items to go swimming with or play games while relaxing with the family.

Should We Leave Anything Behind?

Make sure to keep the weight of the RV down as much as possible. Be mindful of the items you’re packing up. Leave behind the gourmet kitchen experience. Keep it simple as you don’t want to end up with a lot of wasted items.

What Does a Vehicle Inspection Look Like?

The best way to get ready for your RV trip is to do a thorough inspection before heading out. It also helps you to become familiar with your RV. Make sure to check the following:

  • Tire pressure before hitting the road.
  • Batteries – make sure they are charged, and you know where they are.
  • Check ventilation – make sure everything is working properly, the air is flowing and is the right temperature.
  • Appliances – go through the appliances such as the grey water tank, checking the sink or shower, and that the drains are working properly.
  • Awning – If your RV has an awning, make sure it is working and that you know how to use it.

I’m Completely Brand New, What Should I Know?

For those who have never been in an RV or experienced the lifestyle, these are some must-know tips:

  • Practice driving the unit before you head out on the open road.
  • Familiarize yourself with the RV from front to back. Take time to get to know where everything is located and how it works.
  • Check the tires every time you go to use the vehicle. Don’t ever leave out on a trip without doing so first.
  • Make sure to check the weight of the RV and not to overpack. By using a certified scale, knowing what the gross maximum towing capacity is and dispersing your items throughout, you can ensure a safe adventure.
  • Secure the awning before traveling and when you arrive.
  • Make yourself a checklist of everything that should be done as you set up. This will help you to keep from missing anything.
